Higgs Boson: Physicists See Best Proof Yet of 'The God Particle'

    http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/higgs-boson-evidence-god-particle-reported-fermilab-physicists/story?id=16695742#.UJn9Q4aDowI

Stretching with the diameter of 3.8 meters and the circumference of 27 kilometers in the depths of Geneva lies the LHC or Large Hadron Collider. What is the purpose of this large machine you may ask? It is to unraveled the mysteries of the universe by smashing together particles together to find new, smaller fundamental particles. Its latest discovery was that of the “God Particle” or the Higgs Boson. The Higgs Boson is the answer to mass, where previously the origins of mass were unknown. Physics say without the discovery of the Higgs Boson all our known understanding of the standard model would be scrapped and the universe as we know it today would be a very mysterious place. Another discovery about the Higgs Boson Particle is that it is actually not a particle at all but a field. The field acts as a mechanism that slows down particles that are being passed through it therefore creating weight.

  13. iPad Mini charms, but screen is a letdown

    http://www.bradenton.com/2012/11/07/4269781/review-ipad-mini-charms-but-screen.html

This is information about the iPad Mini is going to be on a lot of wish lists this holiday season. It's beautiful and light, but Apple made a big compromise in the design, one that means that buyers should look closely at the competition before deciding. It will be the best for a lot of people going to choice. It’s beautiful and like.
The iPad Mini doesn't have a Retina screen. . By comparison with the first IPad and the IPad2, the iPad Mini's screen looks dull because it doesn't have the same color-boosting technology that the full-size model has.
The base model of the iPad Mini costs $329 and comes with 16 gigabytes of storage. A 32 GB model goes for $429 and 64 GB for $529. Soon, you'll be able to get versions that can connect through cellular networks, not just Wi-Fi. Add $130 to the price.

  14. Video camera
    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/itslideshow/17075381.cms

A digital camera can suffice, but if shooting good quality home videos or continuous recording is a priority, opt for a video camera.

Until a few years ago, camcorders or video cameras were the only way to get a high quality video from a portable device. The quality of video and sound was much better compared with that from a digital still camera. Now, due to the improvement in video quality from still cameras, not many people see the advantage of buying a dedicated video camera.

However, if video recording is your priority, you need to record continuously, or want extra features; a video camera might be a better choice.

AT&T to invest $14B over 3 years to improve networks

    http://www.freep.com/article/20121108/NEWS09/311080118/AT-T-to-invest-14B-over-3-years-to-improve-networks

AT&T, the top U.S. telephone company, said it will invest $14 billion over three years to improve the networks that deliver wireless communications, high- speed Internet access and TV services.
According Roger Entner, who is an analyst at Recon Analytics in Deham, Mass said “today's world, if you don't have broadband, both wireless and wireline, the competition will tear you to pieces”. Nowadays a company that stops investing in the network is a company that starts dying. This is clearly designed to compete toe-to-toe with Verizon and the cable companies.
AT&T said its fourth-generation wireless network, which uses long-term evolution technology, will cover 300 million people by the end of 2014
Total capital spending will be about $22 billion for each of the next three years, AT&T said. That topped the estimate of as much as $20 billion by John Hodulik, an analyst at UBS in New York.

Smart TVs: You Won't Just Watch Anymore
    By Vivian Wagner
    TechNewsWorld
Posted on 10/31/12 5:00 AM PT

In the near future, we won’t just be watching TV. Smart TVs will become the central device in our homes looking after security, shopping and even our health. The term Smart TV already exists, but what does it mean? We now have video on demand and can change channels with our smartphones or voices, but again the TV does nothing except entertain us. Meanwhile, it has become possible to watch movies on phones or tablet PCs, but how many people watch a full movie on their smartphone? TVs are set up in central and comfortable locations perfect for relaxing with a movie.

Smart TVs will still let us watch movies in comfort but allow us to interact far more. When someone phones during your movie, your phone will just be another button on your Smart TV. We can use video conferencing and Skype too. The technology available now means problems of acoustics and background noise from the TV will not be an issue. Accessories or apps can also be used to make a normal TV smarter and more interactive.

Ball-shaped Camera “to help police & fight fighters”
    CNN News, 6 November, 2012, www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20226064
It is a scenario for police and other emergency service. They need to enter a building but don’t know what awaits them inside. It could be a gunman or structure made dangerous by an earthquake. But now, a tennis ball-sized device with six cameras instantly send a 360-picture to a smart phone made by US start-up Bounce image could provide as answers.
The key to design is ease of use and low cost under 500 US$- relative to expensive robotic or fibre-optic alternatives that are to costly classified, and complex. Mr. Aguilar said to BBC.
After the ball is thrown, it sends whatever imaging and data it gathers back to a smart phone or tablet with an easy-to-use app. When you are a police officer under fire working with your tactical gloves on, it is very difficult to operate a complex, often briefcase-sized remote terminal or viewing unit. “It is much easier to just look on a smart phone strapped to your wrist”.
However Noel Sharkey, an expert in artificial intelligence and professor of robotics at university of Sheffield, said that the technology could have privacy implications. If you throw it over someone’s private property, it could be used for instance, by the paparazzi or by criminals who could just throw it over the roof and get lots of images in the between.

Is There Much Of A Market For A Universal Translator?
    By Michael Arrington
    http://techcrunch.com/2012/11/08/is-there-much-of-a-market-for-a-universal-translator/

Microsoft has developed a new universal voice translator. Though there have been similar types of devices, this one is quite impressive because it translates from a native language to a foreign language using the speaker’s actual voice. This device could have wide uses in the business and tourism sectors. The downside of the translator is that it cannot distinguish nuances within a language.

A Japanese company has recently introduced a new cellophane package which can keep fruits and vegetables fresh for several months. The special film used in this package prevents fruits from losing their water by controlling evaporation but at the same time allowing the process of respiration. Another feature of this film is that it resists condensation so it less likely to form moisture. This may not be a revolutionary invention but it can help us save our environment by efficient use of resources. At the same time it will cut the costs of shipping and storing which will finally help to the economy of the countries as well as households.

Microsoft said research breakthroughs had reduced the number of errors made by the instant translation system.
It said it modelled the system on the way brains work to improve its accuracy.
First, the audio of his speech is translated into English text. Next this is converted into Chinese and the words reordered so they made sense. Finally, the Chinese characters is piped through a text-to-speech system to emerge sounding like the individual.
There are still likely to be errors in both the English text and the translation into Chinese, and the results can sometimes be humorous. Many different technology companies, including AT&T and Google, have similar projects under way that are attempting to do simultaneous translation. There are many online free education and educational related free sources offered by both private and public from blogs or tutorial sites to universities to government organizations around the world for the past years. People like to learn and get knowledge via online sources or tutorials apart from general teaching from the schools.

Here, I would like to tell about edX. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (known as MIT) and Harvard University jointly founded the non-profit online education called “edX”. The registered domain name for it is www.edx.org. They spent $30 million U.S Dollar for this project and it was launched in year 2012. It’s developed as a open source software and it offers other institutions of higher learning which wants to give similar offerings for courses at edX website. It has week by week video lectures and interactive learning programs. This project is dedicated for research learning and distance education purpose. Microsoft demos instant English-Chinese translation

    From BBC News

Software that can translate spoken English into spoken Chinese almost instantly has been demonstrated by Microsoft. The software preserves intonation and cadence so the translated speech still sounds like the original speaker.

This translation became possible, he said, thanks to research done in Microsoft labs that built on earlier breakthroughs.

"Of course, there are still likely to be errors in both the English text and the translation into Chinese, and the results can sometimes be humorous," said Mr Rashid in the blogpost. "Still, the technology has developed to be quite useful."

  33. Mini Mover and Shaker: Single-Molecule "Engine" Vibrates Macro Object
The random motion of a hydrogen molecule can drive the oscillation of a much larger structure
    ByJohn Matson
A single hydrogen molecule just might be a real-life little engine that could, according to a new study. It would be hard to imagine an engine much tinier. Physicists in Germany and Spain have demonstrated that a hydrogen molecule dancing between two possible positions can induce regular vibration of a nearby cantilever The molecule's effect is no small feat, given the tiny size of a hydrogen molecule (H2) in relation to the cantilever The type of cantilever in the new demonstration is well known for its orderly oscillations .
In accordance to the new invention in molecules leveraging, motion exemplifies a phenomenon called stochastic resonance, which bridges the worlds of the random and of the orderly. A stochastic resonance is "one way of coupling something that is periodic with something that is noisy," Pascual says. "In this case it turns out that the coupling is very effective." Such resonances, he adds, could be useful in building nanoscale motors driven by single molecules or other tiny objects, whose haphazard fluctuations could be harnessed to produce coordinated motion

  37. Media Companies, Seeing Profit Slip, Push Into Education

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/20/technology/discovery-invests-in-digital-textbooks-in-hopes-of-growth.html?pagewanted=all

This news article focuses on how media companies are moving towards the education sector through digital distribution of their services and products. A few major media companies include Discovery, Walt Disney and NBCUniversal who are entering the realms of schools which was previously dominated by publishing houses. Most teachers also agree that although they are used to the traditional methods of teaching, technology helps student motivation and makes learning more individualized to the pace of every learner. Another important aspect is also the cost per child in acquiring materials to enhance their learning experience. However, leading publishing houses are also aware of this shift and have partnered up with apple's ibook which is their digital version of doing what they do best, just electronically.

One of the applications using mobile payment is Level Up which links credit cards with QR codes that you scan with your mobile phone. The QR codes are imprinted on the products you are going to buy. Other technologies use different barcodes. It’s a way to make the transaction process faster and it doesn’t waste paper.

Facebook Users To Get Free Wi-Fi

Here is a reason for Facebook users to rejoice. The social network is reportedly testing a new Wi-Fi hotspot service for local businesses, which will allow users to free internet access if they do a Facebook check-in.

So you may no longer have to repeatedly type the Wi-Fi passwords at coffee shops. The Facebook router will direct customers to the business’ Facebook page once they log in.

"We are currently running a small test with a few local businesses of a Wi-Fi router that is designed to offer a quick and easy way to access free Wi-Fi after checking in on Facebook," the company confirmed to Inside Facebook.

"When you access Facebook Wi-Fi by checking in, you are directed to your local business’s Facebook Page," it said.
