  2. Six New Technologies Set To Change Education

Which new technologies will have a big impact on education in the next five years? Here are six to watch out for.
The New Media Consortium (NMC) is an international not-for-profit consortium of learning-focused organizations dedicated to the exploration and use of new media and new technologies. The consortium's Horizon Reports are regarded worldwide as timely and authoritative sources of information on new and emerging technologies available to education.
The 2011 Horizon Report K-12 Education looks at the technologies most likely to impact education in the coming five years. Released by the New Media Consortium in collaboration with the Consortium for School Networking, the report identifies six new technologies that can expand the tools available to educators without increasing costs – and all of them have the potential to change the way educators, students and institutions work.
The continuing rise of cloud computing
Cloud computing has been around for a while, but it’s only recently started to have an impact on education. How will it affect teaching and learning? According to the report, cloud computing removes the restrictive licensing, high costs and high maintenance associated with traditional software. As a result, schools and universities now have quick and easy access to ready-made teaching and learning applications directly over the internet – vastly increasing the variety of digital tools available in education.

Calendar App Is a Fantastic Time Manager

    http://www.technewsworld.com/story/Calendar-App-Is-a-Fantastic-Time-Manager-77022.html
Fantastical improves on what Apple's Calendar app has to offer and does it in a compact, quickly accessible package. It doesn't ignore Calendar, however, but works with it. It shares information between the programs, including how items are colored, and setting up Fantastical is painless. In a game of word association, it's unlikely that "fantastical" will produce "calendar" in most players' minds -- unless they've used the dandy time management program for Mac OS X of that name. Apple includes calendar software with OS X. It gets the job done. It's nicely integrated with other calendar programs that use the CalDAV protocol, notably Google Calendar. Users can create multiple calendars within Apple Calendar, too. You can have a calendar for work-related events, for example, and another for after business hours activities. It also has a nice search function. Type in a search term and a nice list of relevant items will pop up beside the calendar. Apple Calendar, though, doesn't make the best use of screen real estate -- a drawback if you're using it on smaller Mac models like a MacBook Air or 13-inch MacBook Pro. Also absent from Apple Calendar is the kind of artificial intelligence that programs like Microsoft Outlook have been using for years to make creating new events and reminders easier.

  10. HP Issues Statement on Autonomy and 10-K
HP today issued the following statement related to its write-down of Autonomy as represented in its 2012 10-K:

HP has been very transparent about the issues relating to Autonomy and the reasons why we announced an $8.8 billion non-cash impairment charge on November 20th. As we have said previously, the majority of this impairment charge, more than $5 billion, is linked to serious accounting improprieties, disclosure failures and outright misrepresentations discovered by HP’s internal investigation into Autonomy’s practices prior to and in connection with the acquisition.

Our Form 10-K for fiscal 2012 is meant to provide the necessary overview of HP’s financial condition, including our audited financial statements, which is what our filing does. As disclosed in the filing, the U.S. Department of Justice advised HP that they have opened an investigation relating to Autonomy. HP is cooperating with the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the UK’s Serious Fraud Office in this matter. We continue to believe that the authorities and the courts are the appropriate venues in which to address the wrongdoing discovered at Autonomy.

    http://mashable.com/2013/01/08/good-tech-habits/

While technology is making our lives easier and more efficient, we can spend more time exploring and doing more than we used to. This article has suggested eight ways how we can make technology a part of our life in the best way possible. Our habits lead into actions and eventually becomes a big part of our life. This is the best time to start. The habits include keeping an eye on third party permissions we give out freely, checking our smart gadgets and clearing out clutter apps once in a while. It is also important to keep our passwords strong and unable to be penetrated from hackers. The next habit, is to remember to sit up straight and not ruin your health while making your life more efficient. The more we use technology, the more we take things for granted-so remember that backing up is still important and do it. We are sometimes victims of hard to throw away mail and therefore the next tip will be to tidy up your inbox and organize your photographs that are all over the place. The last habit this article advises is something we do in class and should carry on to our daily life to cope with this crazy advancement called technology-that is to learn something new whenever you can. Enjoy technology!

Black-and-White Television is still used in UK

There are more than 13,000 households are still using black-and-white television across UK through TV licensing authority. Black-and-white television license costs are cheaper than a color license costs. According to TV licensing authority stated that people have to pay £ 49 a year for black-and-white, and £145.50 for color TV set. The reason that, people continued use could largely by explained by low-income households wanting to save money on the license fee. In addition, there may have users who prefer it because they don’t want to throw away a still working machine or they may want to collect due to old TV sets.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, South Korean electronics firm showed off a flexible smartphone which can be folded like a paper. A super-thin plastic which is easily bendable has been replaced by the glass in this type of smartphone. The screen uses organic light-emitting diode or OLED which can generate its own light. Samsung is currently using the OLED technology in its several models but in the latest one the chemicals laid over flexible plastic instead of glass. The device runs Windows Phone 8 rather than Android.

The blind see, the deaf hear, the mute can be heard
    By Virginia Heffernan
    http://news.yahoo.com/ces-2013--the-blind-see--the-deaf-hear--the-mute-can-be-heard-191343896.html
In the past, I used to hear my ancestors talking about something magic such as the flying mat, the magic mouth, ear and something else. Passing the centuries, scientists try to discover and bring these dreams become true. As a result, plan is created to represent the dream of flying mat; the phone and internet represent the magic mouth and ear. But what are more excited and miraculous is that in this 2013, the blind see, the deaf hear, the mute can be heard.
According to CES 2013, these things are the eye-tracking, 3-D headphones and voice technology that can read anything you write in your voice. All this stuff was originally developed for the disabled, and creating it ended up alighting on whole new models of how our senses work.
The eye is better thought of as an antenna than a camera. It’s a sensor—liquidy, squishy, and hypersensitive. The latest bionic eye, working off this model, allows the blind to see in grayscale in 576 pixels.
Hearing, too, is being rethought. The new 3-D headphones, first made for the hearing-impaired, have necessitated the first headphone patent since in the 1920s. They don’t divide sound into stereo—they wrap it around the head where different frequencies hit the brain from a spectrum of angles.
Finally, the voice. In 2006, the movie critic Roger Ebert lost his voice box to thyroid cancer. But recordings of his voice were subsequently digitized and turned into all possible English sounds. He can now type words and have them said aloud—in his own voice.

  15. New TVs driven by software and streaming, not pixels
    by Heather Kelly
    http://edition.cnn.com/2013/01/08/tech/gaming-gadgets/new-tvs-ces/index.html

Televisions are getting wider and thinner, their edges shrinking to make room for displays that pack in more and more pixels. It's the smaller, tablet-inspired features that could end up being more enticing to average consumers. These include improved software interfaces, Internet connectivity and social integration, tablet and smart phone pairing, apps and more options for content sources other than cable. We spend so much time swiping around intuitive smart phone interfaces that navigating through TV menus feels like a harsh trip back in time. TV makers are adding new ways to navigate between these, including gestures and voice control.

  24. Cheap smartphones global market grows
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20986550
By Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

Asha, the budget smartphone line from Nokia, is outselling its premium handset offering, the Windows-run Lumia, by over two to one. The total number of both Asha and Lumia devices sold in the last three months of 2012 was 14 million. Only 4.4 million were Lumias.

Apple may soon offer a lower-priced iPhone model. It is forecasted that by 2016, 31% of the global overall handset market will be low-end smartphones. The difference in cost to the consumer is significant: A basic smartphone in the UK can cost about 30 UK Pounds (฿1500), but the iPhone 5 currently costs over 500 UK Pounds (฿25000).

It is questionable if Apple can maintain their market position, being in the small but premium end of the market. In the UK, for example, only 28% of smartphone owners had iPhones. The problem is cheaper phones have lower quality components and performance. Apple’s strategy has been to update older models rather than develop a new design. Analysts believe Apple should be more aggressive and develop a lower-price model

It's time to rewrite Java from scratch, security expert says

According to Botezatu, Oracle has lost control of Java's code, which is why serious security vulnerabilities continue to emerge in the software.

"Now is a good time to rewrite some core components from scratch and insure that they're bug-free, rather than patching the application from one version to another," Botezatu said.

Botezatu acknowledges, however, that isn't likely to happen. "Oracle isn't open to making major changes because they could break applications already in the market," he added.

The problem Oracle faces with Java development is one faced by all software makers: How to improve a program without destroying its compatibility with previous versions.

"Look at Windows Vista and how it failed to become adopted because some customers' applications didn't work from XP to Vista," Botezatu explained.
