ReplyDeleteCloaking Device Produces True Invisibility
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/Cloaking-Device-Produces-True-Invisibility-76615.html
In the world of fantasy books and sci-fi movies invisibility cloaks like the ones in Harry Potter have been around for ages, now scientists have turned fantasy into reality. Believe it or not cloaking devices have been around for some time now, but they featured major flaws (although the subject has blended into the environment they were still very easy to spot). This new prototype has solved many of the problems that the earlier versions had. The first version left a vague image of light around the corners of the cloak but the new cloak ”splits light into two waves which travel around an object in the center and reemerge as the original single wave.” This device has been planned to be used for military purposes such as hiding smaller military vehicles. As for now the device cannot be used on larger objects because of the loud noise it produces.

ReplyDeleteWatch a French researcher control a robot with his brain
http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2012-11/watch-french-researcher-control-robot-his-brain
When we talk about technology referring to robots, then we immediately have to think about Japan, where researchers are working on robots that can be controlled by brainwaves with the goal to make humans feel like there are embodied in the robot. Furthermore a collaboration between the French National Center for Scientific Research and the Japanese Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology was set up to research about how to interpret brainwaves into action that robots can understand. For that you need a signal processing unit that can translate the brainwaves into task that the robot can perform.

ReplyDeleteNokia sees no change in relationship with Microsoft
Description: A corporate logo is displayed at the Nokia flagship store in Helsinki September 29, 2010. REUTERS/Bob Strong
(Reuters) - Nokia's chief executive said there would be no change in the relationship with its software partner Microsoft, despite the software giant's entry into tablets and partnerships with rival phone makers.
Stephen Elop said Nokia retained a "special" relationship with Microsoft, even though others such as HTC have also launched phones with Windows Phone software.
"They're not sitting in the priority meetings that we're sitting in," he said at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecoms conference in Barcelona on Wednesday.
Analysts have said Microsoft could one day become a rival to Nokia if it launches its own smartphones, while there is also speculation that the U.S. company could one day acquire the Finnish phone manufacturer.

US tops Google's list for government snooping
ReplyDeleteBy Emma Woollacott
http://www.tgdaily.com/software-features/67482-us-tops-googles-list-for-government-snooping
Google constantly hands over data at the request of governments. In the first six months of this year, Google has given the United States government the most user data. The US government made more than 7,000 requests for user data, compared to the less than 3,000 requests made by countries like India, France, and Germany. Governments have the right to request this data due to Google’s Transparency Report. However, most of these requests relate to copyright infringement issues by both private companies and governments.

ReplyDeletePaper-thin super material stops flying bullets.
By:Alyssa Danigelis http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2012/11/14/paper-thin-super-material-stops-flying-bullets/
A group of scientists from Rice University have created a new material which can be used in making stronger and lighter body armors. This nano-material which is made up of a structured polymer composite of 20-nano meter thick layers, showed an effective result in dissipating the energy of the 9-millimeter bullet. In other innovative test, the researchers shot tiny glass beads of only a millionth of a meter in size which were successfully stopped by the material.
The scientists hope that the application of this new material will be expanded to the jet engine turbine blades, and protecting satellites from micrometeorites and space junks in the future.

Review: Nexus tablet showcases Google media play
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bradenton.com/2012/11/14/4278631/review-nexus-tablet-showcases.html#storylink=cpy
Over the summer, Google came out with a 7-inch tablet called the Nexus 7. Just as Apple is making an iPad Mini that's about the size of the Nexus 7, Google is now selling a larger version of the Nexus, about the size of Apple's regular iPad. It starts shipping this week.
On the Nexus 10, icons at the bottom of the screen emphasize Google's media products available through Play. Click on a picture of film to watch movies, headphones to listen to music and a book to, well, read books. Another icon gets you to the Play store to obtain more content and apps.
The base model with 16 gigabytes of storage costs $399. A 32 GB version goes for $499. Unlike the iPad, there is no 64 GB version, nor are there ones with cellular connectivity.
The Nexus 10 is sold at Google's online Play store in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Canada and Japan. The 32 GB version also is sold at some Wal-Mart stores in the U.S.

DeleteSolar panel made with ion cannon is cheap enough to challenge fossil fuels
ReplyDeleteTwin Creeks, a solar power startup that emerged from hiding today, has developed a way of creating photovoltaic cells that are half the price of today’s cheapest cells, and thus within reach of challenging the fossil fuel hegemony. The best bit: Twin Creeks’ photovoltaic cells are created using a hydrogen ion particle accelerator.
As it stands, almost every solar panel is made by slicing a 200-micrometer-thick (0.2mm) wafer from a block of crystalline silicon. You then add some electrodes, cover it in protective glass, and leave it in a sunny area to generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect (when photons hit the silicon, it excites the electrons and generates a charge). There are two problems with this approach: Much in the same way that sawdust is produced when you slice wood, almost half of the silicon block is wasted when it’s cut into 200-micrometer slices; and second, the panels would still function just as well if they were thinner than 200 micrometers, but silicon is brittle and prone to cracking if it’s too thin.

Blackberry boss - don't underestimate us
ReplyDeleteBy Rory Cellan-Jones http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20093862
Everyone knows Blackberry. First released as an e-mail pager by Research In Motion (RIM) in 1999, the 200 millionth Blackberry smartphone was shipped in 2012. Thorsten Heins, recently-installed CEO of RIM, tells us about the manufacturing changes and restructuring initiatives at Blackberry.
Last week, the New York Times suggested Blackberry owners were ashamed of their devices. In the city where the Blackberry was once such a status symbol, this was quite an aspersion. Mr Heins, however, dismissed the article citing 80 million satisfied Blackberry users worldwide. Furthermore, he sees huge growth and commitment outside the United States. The problem is, though, seemingly no growth or commitment within the US with figures in the smartphone market falling this year. The Blackberry brand is still respected across the developing world but not so much now in Europe and the US. The Blackberry 10, however, may be about to change this.
As Mr Heins demonstrates, Blackberry 10’s Flow allows the user to move between apps such as e-mail or social network sites without returning to a home screen. The major selling point, though, is the Blackberry 10’s touchscreen. The down point, though, must be the availability of the touchscreen Blackberry 10 – not until early next year! Meanwhile, everyone else is choosing Android or Apple phones. Mr Heins remains unconcerned, pointing out Blackberry 10 is not just another update but a whole new mobile computing platform to regain RIM’s US market share.

ReplyDeleteSmart Boards in the classroom
http://smarttech.com/us/Solutions/Education+Solutions/Products+for+education/Software/SMART+Notebook+collaborative+learning+software/SMART+Notebook+App+for+iPad
Now in Thailand and many other Asian countries they are integrating technology inside the classroom. One good example of this is the implementation of the Smart Board, which is an interactive whiteboard that uses touch for user input. A projector is used to display a computer's video output on the interactive whiteboard, which then acts as a large touch screen
By using smart boards teachers are able to create an interactive learning atmosphere in the classroom for the students making learning fun and easy. Thailand is also investing a lot of its resources to train teachers on how to use the smart board and how to incorporate it in their lessons.

ReplyDeleteDo we need a revolution in higher education?
By William J. Bennett, CNN Contributor
http://edition.cnn.com/2012/06/13/opinion/bennett-higher-education/index.html
The article discusses the disparity between the earnings after a college graduate receives their degree in comparison to the investment they put in towards their college education. This provoking thought is the foundation for the idea of revolutionizing higher education. Professors from several ivy league universities are attempting to educate students through online technology and even better, for free. The examples given are initiatives such as Ed-X and Coursera which have started with their mission to educate just as the Khan Academy has done for elementary and secondary students. There is hope that education will become accessible to all those who seek it and not just the few that can afford to take loans or pay exorbitant amounts of money to get a college education.

ReplyDeleteNext Education's new tech to help schools create maths, science labs
The company has recently crossed the milestone of 5,000 partner schools
Next Education India Private Limited, a Hyderabad-based digital learning solutions provider with focus on the K-12 segment, is developing a new technology that will help schools create their own maths and science labs.
Next Education’s new technology offers multiple teaching and learning aids to teachers to explain the various concepts in maths and physics and help students master them. The labs will allow students to develop insights into various mathematical and physics concepts by virtual activities, real-life applications of concepts, and various hands-on models and manipulatives.
The new labs’ technology is all about accessibility, and to demystify theories like magnetic levitation (maglev), which in theory sounds like something that only a rocket scientist will be able to do. While the technology for maths lab will be launched by January 2013, the science lab will be rolled out by June
This company plans to expand in southeast Asia and West Asia. There is almost a straight match in curriculum and hence they don't need to modify their content. Talks with prospective partners in the geographies are under way, and they expect to enter those regions within a year.

ReplyDeleteThe researchers at IBM teamed up with Lyon, France, to develop the technology that helps the traffic operators to reduce congestions on the road, and maintain an easy traffic flow.
The researchers said they process the real time traffic data, which helps in “predictive traffic management technology” to determine how to keep traffic flowing. It technology is called as “Decision Support System Optimizer” or DSSO, which can detect incidents, predict the impact of these incidents, predicts traffic and suggests the best course of action to solve a problem.
For example it helps the operators to adjust the traffic signals, so that other cars detour quickly when an ambulance is rushing fast on the particular road. “Piloting this analytics technology will help the city anticipate and avoid many traffic jams before they happen, and lessen their impact on citizens,” Gerard Collomb, Lyon’s mayor, said in a statement, reports Mashable. “Using the data that we are collecting to make more informed decisions will help us to promote about how to resolve unexpected traffic events, and optimize public transportation.”

Ultra-Strong Artificial Muscles Made From Carbon Nanotubes
ReplyDeleteNovember 16, 2012 by Range
Ultra-strong artificial muscles, was published by Ray Baughman from the University of Texas at Dallas and his colleagues. The ultra artificial muscles contains of yarns similar in diameter to human hair, which is derived from carbon nanotubes and soaked in paraffin wax. When a current is passed through the yarn, the wax heats up and expands. As the yarn swells, its particular helical weave causes it to shorten, and the muscle contracts. and when the yam is cools, it relaxes and returns to its original length. The twisting and untwisting of the yarns is sufficient to power a miniature catapult. The yarn could be used as actuators in microfluidic systems or as components in optical cameras, as well as intelligent sensors.
