ReplyDeleteAsteroid Belts May Show Us the Way to E.T.
Usually when we think of asteroids we think of fast moving rocks of death, but scientists are now saying that asteroids may be the key to finding new forms of life. Theoretically asteroids may hold water and other organic life and when impacting with a new rocky planet they may potentially start the development of life forms. There is an asteroid belt in our solar system that is just far enough that if it contains ice it would not melt from the sun. This belt sits near what is called the “snow line”. During the birth of our solar system it is thought that these asteroids contained a mixture of dense ice, rock and metals that provided enough to create planets like Jupiter. It is thought that planetary systems that have Jupiter size planets just outside their belt can develop complex life. Within the study of the planetary systems discovered thus far, about 4 percent have the potential to have life.

New York City is removing payphones throughout the city and replacing them with Wifi smart boards. Old payphones around the city are no longer utilized, nor make money since many people own cell phones. These smart boards can be accessed for free, and gives the user information about local restaurants, attractions, and transportation. The plan is to erect 250 kiosks throughout the city, and should be completed by 2013.

ReplyDeleteWhy Facebook's about to slow down (and that's probably good)
http://edition.cnn.com/2012/11/19/tech/social-media/facebook-https/index.html
Facebook is likely to slow down due to security improvements. Recent blog posts state that Facebook is moving its users from North America and later on the rest of the world to a more secure internet connection that is already being used for websites that deal with confidential credit card information. Most often you will see a lock icon in the browser showing that you’re using HTTPS which is the more secure type of internet as opposed to HTTP which is less secure. However the disadvantage is that it could slow down your connection slightly.

Smartphones that can identify knuckle touch and fingernails
ReplyDeleteA modified smartphone, fitted with a small vibration sensor and running Harrison's Finger Sense software, listens for the acoustic and vibrational differences between the three different types of touch, the New Scientist reported.
A fingertip could select an object while a knuckle tap could work like the right-click on a computer mouse and open up a submenu, for example.
"A big problem with touchscreens right now is that they are very simplistic, relative to the capability of our hands. We could do so much more," Harrison said.

It technically doesn't start for another day, but CES is in full swing in Las Vegas. As part of the fun, Acer is bringing us the thinnest Ultra book yet: The Aspire S5. This 13.3" class laptop measures just 15 mm at its thickest point and weighs in at under 3 lbs. Specs get thin from there, the Intel Core processor, SSD and sealed battery are a given; what we don't know is the size of the battery nor the price or release date, though Q2 2012 is promised. What draws our eye more than the thinness lies beneath what's being called a "Magic Flip I/O" port panel. In an homage to the original Mac Book Air, Accer is including a concealed panel for connectivity beneath the display hinge. Where the original MBA, though, made do with a single USB port, the Aspire S5 features HDMI, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt, a first for a non-Apple laptop. Rated at 20 Gabs, the Thunderbolt port could be driven by Intel's Eagle Ridge chip, or it could be a newer ridge part we'd been waiting to encounter. We'll be sure to report in when we get our hands on one.

Samsung to view Apple-HTC settlement
ReplyDeleteby Josh Lowensohn November 21, 2012 5:03 PM PST
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57553311-37/judge-samsung-gets-to-view-apple-htc-settlement-details/
Smartphone competitors Apple and HTC recently agreed to a ten-year licencing deal on all current and future patents. The two companies had been in a legal dispute since March 2010 when HTC were sued for allegedly infringing twenty Apple iPhone patents. HTC later sued Apple for infringement of patents relating to mobile devices, but all legal action between the two companies was stopped when a confidential settlement agreement was reached on 10 November 2012.
Samsung, who are involved in a long-running legal dispute with Apple, then requested Apple provide a copy of the Apple-HTC license agreement. Samsung claim some patents included in the Apple-HTC agreement may be included in the Samsung-Apple legal dispute. Apple proposed details of the agreement be released to Samsung’s lawyers but with various information such as royalty rates edited. However, a California court ruled today that Samsung will be able to view full details of the Apple-HTC agreement.
The judgement ruled an edited version of the Apple-HTC agreement would not be acceptable because only Samsung lawyers would view the document.

World's oldest working computer gets fired up
Even it mentioned as "the world's oldest working computer" but it is not the oldest computing device but it is regarded as the first modern computer because it is still capable of working. The visitors can now check Wolverhampton Instrument for Teaching Computing from Harwell, or WITCH in Buckingham-shire, England has 3-ton weight and it lights up the National Museum of Computing with its flashing bulbs and chattering printers. It seems crazy to think of a computer as a room-sized mechanism for the modern people using smaller, thinner, and lighter devices but it was first used in 1951 for atomic research. Its Architecture design was based on reliability rather than speed and meant to solve algorithms at roughly the same speed as a single human mathematician using a mechanical calculator and could work for days on end without an error, according to the museum. WITCH is on display at the museum alongside the Colossus Mark II, which is the world's first electronic computer.

ReplyDeleteRadiation-proof robot may help Japan
http://www.news.com.au/technology/sci-tech/radiation-proof-robot-may-help-japan/story-fn5fsgyc-1226521599996
Toshiba Company has introduced a robot which can help during nuclear disasters. The initial idea of designing the robot was to help decommission the devastated Fukushima nuclear power plant. The machine which looks like an ice-cooler with metal legs can go into the high radiated areas and clear the objects. The specific feature of this machine is that its wireless network can automatically seek better transmission when the reception is weak.
The robot which might be used by Tokyo Electric Power Company still needs to improve its capabilities. It was notably slow in climbing the steps during the demonstration and it is not able to get up by its own once it falls.

Apple's Eddy Cue takes firm control over iOS Maps
ReplyDeleteNow that Scott Forstall is on his way out, command of the Maps team has now fallen into the hands of Eddy Cue, seemingly Apple's go-to guy when it comes to fixing up software that initially fell below expectations

.
As time marches forward, the release of Apple's Maps app may soon be remembered more as the piece of software that led to the unceremonious exit of Scott Forstall than as Maps app riddled with problems and perhaps released too soon.
In his apology letter to iPhone 5 users, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that Apple "will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard" users have come to expect from Apple. And since then, Apple has reportedly had its Maps team working long hours while also trying to recruit former Google Maps employees to help shore up holes in Apple's own offering.
What's more, now that Forstall is on his way, out command of the Maps team has now fallen into the hands of Eddy Cue, seemingly Apple's go-to guy when it comes to fixing up software that initially fell below expectations.
The Wall Street Journal reports:
Apple has continued to work to fix the bugs in its mapping software. The maps team is now under senior vice president for Internet software and services, Eddy Cue, who also oversees products like iTunes and iCloud. Mr. Cue has been hands-on with the maps team and participates in regular meetings to fix the product, according to a person familiar with the matter.
And as Apple attempts to improve its Maps app, looming in the rear view mirror is Google who is reportedly hard at work coming up with a standalone Maps app for iOS.
Google has distributed a test version of its new mapping app that will work on Apple's iPhones to some individuals outside the company, said a person with direct knowledge of the matter. Google has been putting the finishing touches on the app before submitting it for approval to the Apple iTunes store, this person said, though it's unclear exactly when that will happen.
There has been speculation that Apple may reject a standalone Google Maps app or, perhaps more likely, keep it perpetually "under review." That, however, doesn't seem likely if only for the PR backlash that would inevitably result.

ReplyDeleteNews card 4
For my news card 4 I would like to tell about the Sky smartpen. It is a writing instrument with a tiny computer inside that records notes written on special microdot paper. The notes are sent to a personal account wirelessly through a partnership with Evernote.
The pen has up to 8GB memory. Not only it also records audio, which can be beneficial for meetings and lectures but also users can playback moments of the audio by touching the pen at the corresponding spot in the handwritten notes. In the sky note instead of buttons, the pen's functions are listed in the notebook; just touch the pen to the command what you want. It saves a lot of time and support what you want to know within a few second. The size of the pen is not so big so you can carry easily with you all the time.

ReplyDeleteHybrid teaching and Flipped Classrooms
http://www.nationmultimedia.com/opinion/Hybrid-teaching-and-Flipped-Classrooms-30194585.html
This article talks about an interesting concept that challenges teachers to rethink their idea of teaching and student learning. Traditional classrooms are all about students attending a class to study about a subject which is possibly taught through lecture or a presentation and then they are given an assignment to take home. In the flipped classroom students are given access to the material or subject that they will be discussing in the classroom through shared media. Through self-directed learning they will have to read up about the subject and try to understand it as much as they can before they come to class. In class they will no longer be listening to teachers' lectures, instead they will be doing hands-on projects and assignments. Teachers are no longer lecturers but rather facilitators, they are ready to answer questions and help with challenges students face concerning subject matter. An interesting concept that might work.
