  1. Boeing uses potatoes instead of people to test wi-fi
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20813441

Boeing's engineers did a number of tests to ensure that passengers would get the strongest possible wi-fi signal while in the air, all while meeting safety standards that protect against interference with an aircraft's electrical systems.
To test the signal distribution, the firm turned to spuds instead of human test subjects, filling the seats with 20,000lbs (9,000kg) of potatoes in sacks. The potatoes "interact" with electronic signals in a similar way to humans.
Frederic Rosseneu of the European Potato Trade Association Europatat said the organisation was "looking forward to other experiments in which spuds can help to make our lives more convenient".

  2. How to sell or get rid of your old gadgets
    By Heather Kelly
    http://edition.cnn.com/2012/12/25/tech/gaming-gadgets/used-electronics/index.html

There are several ways to get rid or your old gadgets after acquiring a new device. First, you can sell the device for cash on several website like eBay, Amazon, and Craigslist. Next, you can trade it in for credit toward a new device. Third, you can donate the device to charity that will aid a family or person in need. Finally, can recycle the device if it is too old, destroyed, or in disrepair. There are several locations within your area that allow electronics recycling. Instead of just throwing out an old device, there are several options to get rid of it.

    Computation helps understand cancer

By: Jasmin Fisher , Researcher at Microsoft Research Cambridge, Programming Principles & Tools group

    20 June 2012

The decade of genomic revolution following the complete determination of the human DNA sequence, has produced significant medical advances, and yet again, revealed how complicated human biology is, and how much more remains to be understood. Biology is an extraordinary complicated puzzle; we may know some of its pieces but have no clue how they are assembled to orchestrate the symphony of life, which renders the comprehension and analysis of living systems a major challenge.
Computer science can play a major role in helping solve this puzzle. Recent efforts to create executable models of complex biological phenomena - an approach we call Executable Biology - entail great promise for new scientific discoveries, shading new light on the puzzle of life. At the same time, this new wave of the future forces computer science to stretch far and beyond, and in ways never considered before, in order to deal with the enormous complexity observed in biology.

Complex human diseases, such as cancer, arise from the interaction between many different genes and the environment and are the main causes of death in Europe. In contrast to the successful identification of genes underlying rare monogenic diseases, studying the genetic basis of common complex diseases has been more challenging.

Evidence is mounting to suggest that the genetic background of the patient has a profound impact on a wide variety of complex disease in humans, but so far, the genetic mechanisms are mostly unknown. The nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans is an important model for the identification of genes underlying complex diseases in humans. Indeed some key genetic processes in C. elegans have been implicated in human cancers and the simplicity of the C. elegans worm allows easy and detailed study of those processes.

My work at Microsoft Research Cambridge focuses on the usage of computer-based techniques originally developed for engineering computerized systems, to model and analyze the crosstalk between cancer signalling pathways during C. elegnas development. We work in a consortium with five other research groups from the UK, Netherlands and Switzerland, (EU FP7 consortium called PANACEA) and we aim to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying complex human disease, in particular cancer. In this joint effort, we analyze large experimental data set through executable modeling of cell differentiation and cell death (apoptosis), which are fundamental in cancer development. Our modeling work has already provided several new biological insights, and we hope that this line of work will further help generate a broader description of disease states, and pave the way for novel drug targets and therapies for human cancers.

This information is very important for human being life.

Happy New Year 1st January 2013

Ten tips for women to thrive in the male-dominated ad-tech world
By Nicolle Pangis and Maureen Little, December 26, 2012 4:45 PM
    http://venturebeat.com/2012/12/26/ten-tips-for-women-to-thrive-in-the-male-dominated-ad-tech-world/
In the era of modern technology of this 21st century, in their job implementation, what would the women to thrive the male-dominated ad-tech world?
As proposed by Denise Colella, the chief revenue officer at Maxifier, a company that provides inventory optimization services to online publishers, ad networks and leading media companies throughout North America and Europe, these are the 10 tips for women who want to break through the allegorical glass ceiling and succeed as an executive without sacrificing family or sanity:
    1. Embrace what sets you apart from your male co-workers.
    2. Be vocal and make sure your boss knows your aspirations.
    3. Invest in building your own brand.
    4. Talking is good: find a mentor you relate to.
    5. Working long hours does not mean working effectively.
    6. Base hiring on improving your team’s bench strengths, not who may be next on maternity leave.
    7. Don’t pay attention to what everyone else is doing.
    8. Make a plan to balance your personal and work lives.
    9. Learn as much as you can from as many people as you can.
    10. Remember to take care of yourself.

  10. APPLE CHANGES MFI POLICY IN RESPONSE TO POP CHARGER KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN

Last week, after Apple pulled the plug on the POP multi-device charging station crowdfunding campaign, the device was set to claim the dubious honor of becoming the largest refund from a Kickstarter project to date. After exceeding its funding goal almost three times over, Apple informed the device’s creator, James Siminoff, that its licensing rules wouldn’t allow a device that featured both Lightning and 30-pin adapters. Apple says it has now reviewed its specifications, possibly giving POP the green light.

Available as AC-powered and portable battery-powered models, the POP is a minimalist all-in-one charger that features two USB ports on the underside of the unit, along with four retractable cords that were originally intended to charge Apple and micro-USB devices using a 30-pin/micro-USB combo tip. However, after the release of the iPhone 5, the design was changed to replace two of the 30-pin connectors with two Lightning connectors. It was here that Siminoff ran into trouble.
Although the device in its original form was part of Apple’s MFi (Made For iPod) program before the release of the iPhone 5, when it was submitted with the integration of Lightning connectors Siminoff was told it violated the technical specifications of Apple’s MFi license, which had been updated to forbid Lightning connectors featuring alongside any other connectors in a single device.

Apple patents method to bend glass
In a flexible future, Apple has patented a method that could help propel traditional glass screens. However, for instance of not only Apple's can explore the possibility of flexible screens but also Samsung draws attention to show off at CES 2013 next month a 5.5-inch flexible phone screen. Nokia has also toyed with flexible phones in its research labs.
Apple's new patent gives explanation how the method can be used to dynamically change glass figure to create a bend or curve without overstretching the glass or causing cracks created by air vacuums. Recently, the company secured a patent that covers the design of flipping pages on a digital screen, as well as a filing a patent application that could result in near-field communications technology becoming incorporated with its Passbook app and Apple is best known for the huge amounts of patent filings it tends to present. Next, there’s no agreement that a patent for a particular technology will ever go ahead to a marketable product using that technology.

  14. Top 10 Open Source Tools for learning and teaching Math

This article talks about open source softwares that can be used by students and teachers to study or teach math. What makes the following softwares great is that they are open source or free. Teaching math can be frustrating sometimes but with the help of software tools teaching math can be a lot easier.

SAGE – SAGE can be used for studying a wide variety of mathematics, including algebra, calculus, number theory, graph theory and more. It is used as an open source alternative to many commercial mathematics programs, including Magma, Maple, Mathematica and MATLAB.

Maxima – This popular computer algebra system puts an emphasis on symbolic computation. It can be used for advanced algebraic calculations and will plot functions and data in both two and three dimensions.

Octave – Octave is a high-level program that performs numerical computations. It is often used in conjunction with MATLAB. Octave is written in C++ and features its own interpreter that translates the Octave language.

Scilab – This advanced numerical computation package hails from France. Similar to MATLAB, this free program is a high-level programming language that can make large computations with just a few lines of code.

GAP – GAP is short for Groups, Algorithms, Programming. An algebraic computation system, its main focus is on computational group theory. GAP includes its own programming language, as well as large data libraries of algebraic objects.

Apple rumor watch: iOS timepiece on drawing board?

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57560985-37/apple-rumor-watch-ios-timepiece-on-drawing-board/

After creating the iPod, iPhone, and iPad, is Apple now working on an iWatch? A report cited by Business Insider claims that Apple has partnered with Intel to develop an iOS watch. Supply chain sources reportedly told Chinese blog site Tech163.com that the watch would be Bluetooth-enabled and sport a 1.5-inch OLED screen. Earlier this year, Crave readers shared with CNET their dream Apple products. The winner described his as a souped-up iPod Nano watch with futuristic features like wireless connectivity (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and/or NFC) and support for Siri and FaceTime. And it's not exactly unfamiliar territory for Apple. With their small and square design, previous versions of the iPod Nano have done double-duty as watches. Different manufacturers sell watchbands that you can attach to the Nano to wear it on your wrist. Aside from displaying the time, the Nano can play music, display photos, and keep track of your fitness history. I have a Nano with a watchband and often wear it when I go jogging or walking. Apple bumped up the size of the 2012 Nano. so it can no longer serve as a watch. So perhaps the company could have a true smart watch in its sights as the next technology frontier to conquer.

LG bringing high-res tablet, smartphone, and TV screens to CES
Early next month at CES 2013, LG intends to demo several Ultra High Definition (UHD) TVs at three different sizes: 84-inch, 65-inch, and 55-inch. All sport resolutions of 3,840x2,160 pixels and feature the company's passive 3D technology.
Possibly the most exciting demo (at least for me) will be a 30-inch, 4,096x2,160-pixel-resolution monitor. Extreme definition monitors have previously topped out at 2,560x1,600 pixels, and LG says its new display will appeal to medical professionals and designers, but I'm personally more interested in how video games running at its native resolution will look on it.

On the mobile end, LG will demo a full HD (at least 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution), 5.5-inch smartphone display with a 403 ppi and a 7-inch tablet display sporting a 1,920x1,200-pixel resolution and 324 ppi. It'll also show a 12.9-inch, 2,560x1,700-pixel-resolution laptop panel, which would deliver a higher ppi than the MacBook Pro with Retina Display.
Thin bezels will also get some love. We'll see a narrow-bezel monitor with a 23.8-inch screen and a 13.3-inch laptop panel with a bezel measuring less than 2mm (0.07 inch) thick, and a 4.7-inch display with a 1mm (0.03 inch) bezel.
LG will also show a 3.5kg (7.7-pound), 4mm (0.15-inch) thick 55-inch OLED WRGB TV display.
We hope that these will all purportedly be displayed in a private booth, so hopefully we'll actually get a chance to get some up-close-and-personal time with them.

Windows 8's best feature isn't being used by most Windows 8 PC owners.
    http://money.cnn.com/2012/12/28/technology/mobile/windows-8-touchscreen/index.html
Only 30 of the more than 700 laptops that Best Buy (BBY, Fortune 500) sells on its website have touch screens, and just two touch screen laptops ranked among the retailer's top 10 sellers.

The cheapest touch screen laptop -- the 11.6-inch Asus VivoBook -- sells for about $500, but fuller-sized touchscreen notebooks with all the latest features will set you back at least $625. Touch features aren't an afterthought in Windows 8; they're core to the entire operating system.

Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) has been aggressively marketing Windows 8's touch features on TV, showing off new inventions like "picture passwords" (use a gesture, like a circle, on a chosen part of a favorite image as your log-in credential) and tablet-like apps.

  25. China toughens its restrictions on use of the internet
    http://mobile.nytimes.com/2012/12/29/world/asia/china-toughens-restrictions-on-internet-use.xml

    By KEITH BRADSHER

    Published: December 29, 2012

New rules from the Chinese government mean internet users must now provide real names to service providers. Internet companies will also have more responsibility for deleting forbidden postings and reporting them to the authorities. Whilst bloggers can still use pseudonyms, they must provide their real names first. This is in a country where internet users can be jailed for politically-sensitive comments.

Recently, internet users in China exposed scandals that led to resignations or dismissals of local officials. Furthermore, following international news media reporting the accumulation of wealth by the families of China's leaders, many sites were blocked. The government deny the new rules are to prevent the exposure of corruption. Instead they claim the measures will protect users from misuse of their personal data.

Meanwhile, China continues to block more foreign web sites and VPNs, virtual private networks, which are used to encrypt computer communication used by businesses and individuals in China to prevent government monitoring.

It seems that China is willing to have a freer economy in the future, the new internet restrictions show that free political discussion is still not wanted.
