New Windows chief explains why Microsoft redesigned Windows

New head of Microsoft’s Windows Division Julie Larson-Green discusses below some of the changes made to Windows.

Windows was created 25 years ago, and computing is now completely different. Windows 8 features a kind of dashboard display with Live Tiles and touch display. In the future, the vast majority of PCs will have touch screens.

Planning of Windows 8 began before the introduction of the iPad, with its mobile and touch features, but many of the iPad’s features were similar to Windows’ future plans. Windows 8 allows the user to type with the traditional keyboard and mouse or the touch screen. Windows state users need only up to two weeks to adjust to the new system, and a new customer experience improvement program shows positive results. Microsoft has also introduced its own hardware, the Surface Tablet, for Windows.

  7. Even FCC thinks in-flight gadget bans are dumb
    By Adrian Covert
    http://money.cnn.com/2012/12/09/technology/in-flight-cell-phones/index.html

The United States FCC has determined that it is no longer necessary to ban use of gadgets in-flight. Such gadgets include, but are not limited to, e-readers, iPads, and other tablets. After numerous testing of gadgets in-flight, the FCC has no proof that they interfered with on-board instruments, as airlines have previously stated. Though airlines believed anomalies occurred, they could never replicate the anomaly in testing. Many airlines are concerned that gadgets would distract passengers pay attention during flight safety instructions. However, passengers are allowed to read magazines, books, etc. during announcements. The FCC recommends that the policy should change, but it will not happen quickly or overnight.

  10. Samsung eyes 2013 launch for Galaxy Note III
    by Trent Nouveau
    http://www.tgdaily.com/mobility-features/68050-samsung-eyes-2013-launch-for-galaxy-note-iii
Samsung is reportedly preparing to launch its Galaxy Note III "phablet" sometime in 2013. The device is slated to boast an even bigger screen than its predecessor which sports a 5.5-inch screen.
Indeed, according to the Korea Times, the Samsung Galaxy Note III will boast a rather large 6.3-inch OLED display.
However, Raymond Wong of BGR expressed skepticism over the possibility of a 6.3-inch display, noting that such a large screen would force Samsung to equip the device with a significantly more powerful battery, especially since it would also support LTE. Of course, holding such a large device with one hand would be even more difficult than trying to do so with Galaxy Note II. The Samsung Galaxy Note II features a 5.5" (140.9mm) HD Super AMOLED display with a 16:9 screen ratio, HSPA Plus/4G LTE connectivity and 16GB-64GB of storage. The Android handset is powered by a 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos processor and includes an 8 megapixel rear-facing and 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera with HD 1080p video-recording capabilities.

  14. On Facebook, Bad With the Good
    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/16/fashion/using-facebook-to-announce-bad-news.html?ref=technology&_r=0
Posting bad news on facebook can eases the pain for the bearer of bad news and the recipient. It’s really hard to break bad news without crying or falling apart. But we can share painful news in less painful ways.
You post news on facebook, come back in eight hours and read all the comments that you get, and don’t have to worry about having a difficult conversation.
But some experts think that putting bad news on Facebook almost inevitably trivializes it, to the sufferer’s further detriment.. When someone puts bad news on social media, it’s trying to show bravado, and pretending that you’re not devastated by the news. It isn’t good because if you don’t feel the feelings, it interferes with your grief.

  18. Reflections From Two Years of Khan Academy in the Classroom

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/shantanu-sinha/khan-academy_b_1918342.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular,education-technology

Khan Academy started from humble beginnings of providing tutorial videos for students in specific areas of learning. Today they have partnered with several schools in order to enhance and enrich student learning experience. They base their reflections on aspects they believe are critical to the learning process. The model works because it is flexible enough to understand that every student is different and so is every classroom. The article also discusses the flipped classroom and how it brings about a more creative, engaged and interacting atmosphere of learning. It was believed that personalized learning tools would only be able to motivate the high achieving students, but that could not be further from the truth. Students were able to bring up their confidence and their understanding at their own pace and most importantly not fall behind on their curricula requirements. Finally, perhaps the most important reassurance is that teachers are now more valuable than they ever were. They finally get to spend time doing what they love best and become mentors to their students, an important element for student success.

Lytro's Light Field technology allows the camera to capture much more information about a scene than is captured by a conventional digital camera. Conventional cameras describe the sum total of light rays striking each point in an image. Light Field captures the color, intensity and direction of all the rays of light flowing into the camera.

This means data transfer can be transferred a lot faster compared to using electrical signals. This chip and technology does not only help with faster data transfer but it is also able to transfer bigger data compared to the other method.
So what does this mean for the public? It simply means faster internet speeds and higher data transfer rates.
